The Rise of Lošinj's Ships and Captains

Almost uninhabited until the mid-13th century, Lošinj became a leading naval power by the 19th century. Mali Lošinj, its main town, emerged as the second most important port on the Adriatic after Trieste. Renowned for their shipbuilding skills and as the finest sailors in the Mediterranean, the people of Lošinj significantly shaped maritime history. In the 19th century, Mali Lošinj had six shipyards, making it a European shipbuilding hub. It briefly ranked second in Austro-Hungarian shipbuilding for long sailing ships. By the late 19th century, Lošinj had nearly 150 sailing ships, more than neighboring Istria, with 1,400 captains and sailors at its peak between 1855 and 1870. Notable shipbuilders included the Katarinich, Tarabochia, and Cosulich families, founders of the Monfalcone shipyard. Discover Lošinj's rich maritime heritage, where history and tradition sail together in harmony.
